Manor Road Garage is a striking piece of Art Deco architecture, originally built in 1934 with a sleek Moderne-style frontage. It served as a garage until around 1973, offering sales, service, and repairs, and even had cars available for hire. The building then stood vacant for 40 years before being lovingly restored to its original Art Deco style and transformed into luxury apartments.
This restoration preserved many of its historic details, including the rare Shell petrol pumps, which date back to the 1940s or early 1950s—an incredibly rare survival of early motoring heritage.
Bringing Manor Road Garage to Life Through Art
On a recent visit, I saw the garage covered in scaffolding for redecoration. Still, instead of seeing construction, I imagined it as it once was—a buzzing hub for early motoring enthusiasts. That vision inspired me to recreate it in my signature Art Deco illustration style, highlighting its iconic architecture, vintage Shell petrol pumps, and a 1935 Auburn Speedster in Swiss Green.
This piece celebrates East Preston’s motoring history, capturing the timeless elegance of the golden age of travel.
